![]() ![]() This symphony of strangeness reached its crescendo when the rubber-masked imposter dropped his trousers, exposed his backside, and weathered a spirited flyswatter spanking from a female assistant. “Oh, I just made a giant masterpiece printed all over the greatest world newspaper nerds.” (hums the theme song to the 1959 TV series “Clutch Cargo”) “Catch the wave.” (a reference to the New Coke marketing slogan) “This guy’s better than Chuck Swirsky.” (a WGN -TV sportscaster at the time) With no engineers on location at the transmission tower, WTTW employees looked on helplessly as the intruder seized control of their broadcast. ![]() With a randomly gyrating panel of corrugated metal used as a backdrop, the unnerving Max Headroom doppelganger launched into an eccentric diatribe in a highly distorted voice. Almost exactly two hours after the first unplanned detour from normality, at 11:15pm, viewers of the PBS affiliate WTTW were absorbing an episode of the British sci-fi series Doctor Who when their TV pictures danced sporadically for a moment. In spite of the quick actions of WGN-TV engineers, Chicago had not yet seen the last of of this new signal-plundering pirate. But this new instance of signal hacking was much more perplexing. Both of these prior offenders had clear motives, and the authorities had successfully located and prosecuted the troublemakers. The previous year a satellite dish salesman going by the fanciful pseudonym “Captain Midnight” had succeeded in briefly replacing HBO’s signal with a complaint about their prices, and earlier in 1987 an employee of the Christian Broadcasting Network had hijacked the Playboy Channel’s signal. It was not the first time a commercial television broadcast had been commandeered, but very few prior attempts had been successful. WGN-TV’s on-site technicians neutralized the “pirate” transmission by switching to an alternate transmitter, but the attacker’s motives and methods were a mystery. As Chicago’s televisions reverted back to the world of the ordinary, the visibly flustered sports reporter reappeared, and commented, “Well, if you’re wondering what happened… so am I.” Half a minute later, as suddenly as it had appeared, the strange scene was gone. As a low buzzing sound belched from thousands of televisions throughout Chicago, the intruder’s image swayed and wiggled in front of a slowly rotating background. She purportedly threw herself from a top-floor window after being abused by her uncle and is said to be capable of frightening people to death. Our homeward step was just as light As the dancing feet of Astaire And, like an echo far away, A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square How could he know we two were so in love? We stayed at Summer Senses in the final two weeks of the season so it was very quiet, and the villages across the island were starting to close up slowly for the winter. Special mentions to George, Savvas, Thannos and Kelly for the above and beyond approach to our needs. The resort is immaculate, rooms extremely comfortable, the staff provide exemplary service, breakfast is impressive and we were treated like royalty during our stay. ![]() I discovered a number of great hikes on All Trails website, perfect for the blustery windy weather days the islands can experience at this time of year. Address: Cosme, a Luxury Collection Resort, Paros, Naousa 844 01, Greece Book your stay: Mythic Built into the hillside itself, Mythic is hoisted above Paros, making it hands down the best place to take in the sunset on the entire island, and it’s perhaps the worst-kept among guests. It’s further out from the port and Parikias than expected but we hired a car and explored the island. We made a last minute decision to visit Paros and after staying in some waterside villas in Milos opted for the resort experience of Summer Senses. ![]()
![]() I love the look and it’s a huge improvement but the door and window placement make it impossible to use the fireplace as the focal point of the room! The key to decorating this room is the proportion of the furniture to the size of the room. I had marble-look porcelain tile installed over the brick hearth and around the firebox. To make the firebox look centered, we created a “niche” on the right side where the mantel is only 12″ deep. ![]() The flat-faced brick is completely hidden and the surround has a 20″ deep mantle and molding on the “legs.” The new surround/mantle has been centered over the firebox. Three years ago, I had the fireplace “faced” with millwork. ![]() When we bought the house 38 years ago, the rustic brick fireplace had a 2-foot deep hearth and only a 7-inch deep mantle. It’s actually set to the far right with the firebox off-centered to the left. The size is great but the placement of the fireplace makes decorating a challenge! The 9′ long fireplace isn’t centered on the wall. A chair should have, at the very least, a tiny shelf or table nearby. There should be no one-off chairs or seating. In any case, the key point is that your furniture groupings should relate to each other. And in a very larger room, you may need more than one center, which in effect means creating zones. Two notable exceptions: in a very small room, you may have a central composition and still have all the pieces against the walls. A bureau under a window, a desk in an alcove, a table between two columns, etc. Once you have your central cluster (which doesn’t have to be in the literal center of the room), you can then place accents outside the central arrangement and have them relate to an architectural detail instead. The goal is to have the pieces relate to each other, like a cohesive collection, rather than decorating the perimeter of the room. In most average sized rooms, you’ll want to establish a ‘center’ and bring most of the furniture into that space, which often means pulling the seating and tables away from the walls. In the bedroom, the headboard will likely be your focal point and in the dining room a china cabinet or buffet with dramatic decor. We used an “L” shaped couch to face both focal points, but placed the TV lower, over an understated console, to allow the mantel to attain prominence. In our family room, we have a stately fireplace with gilded mirror above, in addition to a large screen TV on an adjacent wall. Once the focal point is selected, everything should be arranged in its direction and for the sake of balance, it’s best not to have other pieces fighting for attention.īut what happens when you have more than one natural focal point? In that case it’s best to choose one as more dominant and downplay the other to maintain harmony in the space. Where no natural focal point exists, you can create one intentionally with a fabulous piece of art or with shelving and the like. It might be a fireplace, a television, or a large window with a great view. ![]() Every room should have a focal point, toward which the furniture is oriented. ![]() Learn more about this event at Disclosure: We received complimentary admission to the Phoenix Zoo for the purpose of review. We often enjoy experiences like these, but at the end of the day, we were happy with our choice. We were tempted to upgrade to the Value Ticket or Total Experience Ticket, which include experiences like the 4-D Theater, Stingray Bay, Safari Train and more, but decided to stick with General Admission and are glad we did. There are changing rooms, shade and seating nearby. Water is turned off during the winter. The Phoenix Zoo has three water playgrounds, so consider packing a change of clothes or swimsuits for children. The Arizona Trail is the exhibit that set the Phoenix Zoo apart from other zoos we have visited because Arizona's unique geography and native animals are really interesting. Pieces of all four North American deserts – Mojave, Great Basin, Chihuahua and Sonora – can be found in Arizona.
